Holocaust Poem by Rev. Martin Niemoller

This poem has always been very powerful to me.  I hope you find some meaning and power in it as well.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out–because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out–because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out–because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak out for me.

  1. Marie says:

I remember reading this poem many years ago in either Dear Ann or Dear Abby…….it was and still is so very powerful. Today at work I was speaking with a customer and mentioned it, she too had read the poem.

Over the years I have spoken to many people about the poem, in the hope that they would realize the importance of taking a stand for something.

Today more than ever we need to stand firm for our beliefs, if we have any sense of right and wrong.
